Aviation Insurance

Aviation Insurance is a very unique industry, very different from homeowners or auto insurance.  For example, aviation insurance is arranged by an independent broker that is not an employee of any of the insurance underwriting companies.  Instead, the broker has appointments with the insurance underwriting companies that allows him/her to arrange for insurance on the client’s behalf.

If you have ever tried to “shop around” for aircraft insurance you have probably at one time or another been told by a broker that the market is “blocked”.  Due to the large number of brokers and the small number of underwriting companies, and in an effort to keep administrative costs down, the underwriters provide quotes on a first-come first-serve basis.  Don’t let this discourage you.  If you have been told that the market is “blocked” you can still switch brokers.  All you need to do is sign a “Broker of Record Letter” for the broker that you’ve decided to do business with, regardless of how many brokers you may have already contacted.  This is a standard letter that all brokers have and it tells the underwriter that you’ve made a decision on your broker and that you’ve given written authorization to the latest broker to handle your account.

Many of the insurance brokers in business today handle aviation insurance as a sideline to their other book of business.  Due to the intricacies of aviation in general it only makes sense that you have an aviation broker handle your aviation insurance.  You owe it to yourself and your coverage to have an aviation expert handle this important part of your aircraft ownership.
